Specializing with the Sandwich Generation and Aging Parents

In the last few years, more and more clients are coming to us to discuss real estate needs in regards to their aging parents. Known as the sandwich generation, this generation of people are usually in their 30s or 40s and care for their aging parents while supporting their own family.

Aging parents may be affected by new health issues or memory issues such as Alzheimer’s. Most families are not ready to deal with this new set of issues, as most are still focused on raising their own family. With this focus on raising a family, many in the sandwich generation may not see the new issues sneaking up on mom and dad.

A few years ago, we received an introduction to working with a senior client moving from a house to an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, our senior client had significant health issues and our client’s home needed some work. The roof, flooring, paint and landscaping all needed to be addressed prior to selling the home. While addressing these issues took longer than normal, the family sold the home for significantly more than if they did not address the issues.

Jamie Thompson is designated as a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES). The SRES provides rigorous education focused on developing understanding of needs of the 50 plus demographic. The SRES Council is known to have knowledgeable, passionate members that serve consumers in the 50 and older market.

Our sandwich generation client relied on us to manage the project and get the home sold. Our selling process helps seniors downsize, clear the home, address the condition of the home, and prepare the home for sale. The goal is to enable our senior clients to sell their homes for the best possible value.
